World Book Day 2012

We commemorated World Book Day in style this year!  Everybody knows the best way to read a book is in bed, so to celebrate that, we came to school in our pyjamas - or dressed as a boko character - with our favourite bedtime book and bedtime teddy.  What a lovely way to spend the day!

On Tuesday, we took part in our first Hockey competition, and we were fantastic!

A team of 6 from Class 3 competed against 5 other schools at Walbottle Campus.  We won one game 3-1, drew one game 1-1 and lost one 1-0!

We can't wait to play our next game!

NUFC Foundation Celebration

As a way of thanking the school for our support of the Newcastle United Foundation's Match Fit programme, a small group of children were invited to an event at St. James' Park.

We spent the afternoon sampling some delicious food and mingling with such sporting celebrities as Jonathan Edwards, Bob Moncur and Peter Beardsley.

The highlight of the day was definitely when James and Ben from the Foundation managed to sneak us away from all the grown ups talking...we got to see the home team changing rooms and even got to go out onto the side of the pitch!

Spanish Fiesta!

Class 3 and 4 rounded off their 'Spain' topic work with a celebration of Spanish music, food and knowledge.
We sampled Jamon, Chorizo, Pan y Queso, Aioli and Paella.
As Class 3 had 3 birthdays to celebrate, Elaine, Mark and Harley received a rousing chorus of "Feliz Cumpleanos" before sharing their cakes with everyone.

The afternoon was finished off with a quiz where everyone got to show off how much they'd learned!

Paralympic Gold Medallist Stephen Miller

St. George's played host yesterday to a very special assembly led by athlete Stephen Miller.  As part of our work on the London 2012 Olympics, we have been focusing on the Olympic and Paralympic values of  Respect, Excellence, Friendship, Courage, Determination, Inspiration and Equality.  I think we can safely say we saw each of those values perfectly demonstrated by Stephen.

The children were in awe of his achievements - 3 Paralympic golds, Paralympic silver and bronze alongside countless world records.  We will be cheering him on if (when!) he reaches his goal of competing in his 5th Paralympic Games in London this year!

NUFC visit St. George's!

Class 3 loved their Matchfit sessions with the Newcastle United Foundation before Christmas, so when the Foundation asked if they could come back to our school, because of how sensible and well mannered the children were, to do some promotion for the scheme, we said yes!

On Tuesday afternoon, Class 3 impressed everyone - including two Directors from the NHS with their knowledge of the importance of maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle.

The children were VERY excited when James Perch and Danny Simpson arrived to spend some time with them - the footballers enjoyed making fruit kebabs nearly as much as the children did!

Everyone then moved into the hall to take part in some fitness tests - I think James and Danny were very impressed with the motivation and enthusiasm of our children.

St. George's supports "The Bubble Unit"

On the 20th December, our children took time out of their Christmas parties to support a very worthy charity - The Bubble Foundation.

One of our pupils has been very poorly and has received treatment at the 'Bubble Unit', so, in an effort to say thank you to them for all they have done, we wanted to raise some money.

Everyone wrote a Christmas wish on a label , along with their name and the school addrees and attached it to a balloon.  The balloons were released from the school grounds - we watched them disappear over the horizon! I wonder whose will travel the furthest? We're hoping that anyone who finds a balloon and label will let the school know.
